New Bedford Standard-Times Regional fishing regulators voted 9 to 8 on Wednesday to make Atlantic herring one of six management priorities for 2008. The New England Fishery Management Council, which is meeting this week in Newport, R.I., plans to study whether the amount of herring landed by fishing vessels on shore matches what they catch at sea, council spokeswoman Patricia Fiorelli said. Council members will also investigate if any river herring are accidentally caught by mid-water trawlers that target schools of Atlantic herring in the ocean, she said. “There are so many unknowns in the fishery,” Ms. Fiorelli said. |
